The room above the bakery
Marta found the apartment by walking. The agent had given her three addresses and one of them was wrong, but the wrong one was on a street she liked, and so she stayed there for an hour, watching a baker carry trays of dough across a courtyard.
She had not expected the city to be so loud. The city was louder than she had been told, but the loudness was a kind she could plan around — trams at the half-hour, the church across the canal, a man who whistled the same four notes every morning at six.1
The apartment, when she found it, was above the bakery she had been watching, and so the first thing the room ever did was smell of warm flour and orange peel. She thought she might cry but did not.2 She put her bag on the floor and opened the window.
The agent, a woman named Pia who had been late to every appointment, came up the stairs behind her. "It is small," she said, in the way of someone apologizing for a thing she does not really regret.3
"План around" — keep. Lovely. The four notes do a lot of work.

When an editor asks you "why did we change this?" in November and the change happened in February, Quill remembers. Every save is a commit. Every paragraph is rewindable. You can compare any two drafts, and undo selectively across them.
